Become more fully your Self.
CounSouling® is a developmental, mindbody approach to understanding how we become who we are—and creating more freedom to be who we really are.
The truth is, the person we think we are may be, in large part, the person we adapted to become through our lived experiences—especially in childhood.
Along the way, we develop beliefs about ourselves and the world. We experience insecurities. We develop protective parts and ways of relating that help us feel safer, more secure, and more connected.
Over time, these adaptations begin to organize into patterns—patterns in where our attention goes, what we fear, what we seek, how we protect ourselves, and how we relate to others.
Through the CounSouling® lens, this is how we understand your Enneagram type: as an adaptive pattern that developed for meaningful reasons.
CounSouling isn't about deciding those adaptations are wrong or trying to become a "better" version of yourself—or a better version of your type.
It's about understanding what shaped you, becoming curious about what you're still carrying, and creating enough safety and capacity for something more authentic to emerge.
You don't need to become someone else.
You get to become more fully you.
I’ve always wondered why we are the way we are.
Why does one person spend their life trying to get everything right, while another learns to disappear?
Why do some of us become helpers, achievers, caretakers, peacemakers, rebels, or perfectionists?
And why can we know a pattern isn’t serving us anymore—and still find ourselves doing it?
As a therapist, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with hundreds of people and hearing the stories of their lives. Again and again, I found myself less interested in asking “What’s wrong?” and more interested in asking:
“How did this come to make sense?”
That question changed the way I understood people.
The things we struggle with today often have histories. Our personalities, protective parts, beliefs, relationship patterns, and even some of the ways our bodies respond to the world didn’t develop in a vacuum.
There’s a story underneath them.
CounSouling® grew out of my desire to understand that story.
My books, courses, communities, and other resources bring together what I’ve learned about personality, parts, relationships, childhood development, and the mindbody connection—all with an invitation to become curious about your own story.
Not so you can endlessly analyze yourself or try to fix everything about yourself.
But so you can notice what has been running automatically, understand why it’s there, and discover what becomes possible when you have more choice.
Because understanding how you became who you became can create more freedom for the you that is emerging next.
You Can Say F*ck in Here
Sometimes, understanding ourselves begins with hearing someone else tell the truth.
A story that makes us laugh. A moment that makes us uncomfortable. A sentence that sounds suspiciously like something we’ve thought but never said out loud.
That’s part of why I wrote You Can Say F*ck in Here.
It brings you into the therapy room, allowing you sit alongside the messy, funny, painful, deeply human moments that happen there.
You Can Say F*ck in Here is a collection of stories from the couch, inspired by real people and real moments. They offer permission to be real, raw, and unedited—with yourself, with your therapist, and with the people you love.
Because sometimes we find ourselves in our own story.
And sometimes we find ourselves in someone else’s.
“A deep therapeutic dive, filled with challenges, delivered with ease and heightening self discoveries. These stories reveal how survival shapes identity—and how awareness begins to loosen its grip.”Â
~ Edie S., EdS, LMFT, LMHC
“I would’ve never thought reading a book about counseling could be a page turner. I couldn’t wait to read the next story. Self reflection plus humor—I highly recommend!”
~ Melanie C.
“An honest and vulnerable invitation into the therapy room. Katie reminds us that growth doesn’t happen only for the client—it transforms the therapist, as well. Refreshing, human, and deeply genuine.”
~ Kim P., MS, LMFT
Welcome to CounSouling®
I’m Katie, a therapist, author, lifelong learner, and the creator of CounSouling®.
I’ve spent much of my life wondering why we are the way we are—and the Enneagram has become one of the most meaningful frameworks I’ve found for exploring that question.
What I love about the Enneagram is that I don’t see just a personality typing system. I see a map of how we learned to navigate our experiences.
Through the Enneagram, I see connections to attachment and our earliest relationships, the nervous system and our experiences of safety and threat, protective parts, personality development, the mindbody connection, and spirituality.
It helps me understand how our patterns developed, what they may have been trying to do for us, and why they can feel so difficult to change.
But what I love most is that the Enneagram doesn't have to tell us who we are.
It can help us recognize the patterns we've mistaken for who we are—and become curious about who we might be beyond them.
That idea has profoundly changed the way I understand myself, my relationships, and my work as a therapist. And it became a foundation of CounSouling®.
I created this space for CounSoulers—people who want to join me in exploring the Enneagram and other meaningful approaches to better understand ourselves and one another.
Not so we can become better versions of our types.
So we can create more freedom to become more fully ourselves.
